Six Foot Nest

July 31, 2013 Tanzania Nest | Unique Safaris

This enormous nest, weighing almost 100 pounds, is made from thousands of sticks, twigs, and reeds that are held together by mud and dung. Made by a pair of hamerkop birds, also known as the hammerhead stork, the six foot structure can take several weeks to build. The couple will construct a nest even if they aren’t breeding and will sometimes abandon it to build another one. In fact, it is not uncommon for hamerkops to build several nests a years.
