Morning Hunt in the Crater

April 1, 2013 Unique Safaris | Tanzania Safari

Mid-morning, well after the fog had lifted from the crater floor, several lions from one pride were involved in taking down this one Cape buffalo. Cape buffalo are not easy prey and it became a life threatening moment, not just for the buffalo but for the pride male who received a lethal injury from the buffalo’s curved horn.

Typically males are content to let the females hunt, swooping in to take ownership when the kill has been made. However they will hunt during the dry season when food is scarce or when the prey is very large, like in this case with the Cape buffalo.
