August 13, 2013 Tanzania herd at sand river | Unique Safaris

Since mid-July, roughly 35 percent of the herd moved into the Maasai Mara in Kenya whereas the majority of the wildebeests settled in the northern Serengeti of Tanzania, along the Mara River. The herds will remain there through October and even up to early November, crossing the Mara River countless times to take advantage of the grazing areas on both sides of the river. Once the clouds begin to gather in the sky, the herds will start their annual trek south, arriving first in the central region before settling in the southern Serengeti for the much anticipated calving season.

This picture of the herd along the Sand River, an important tributary to the Mara River, was captured by our safari guide on August 11, 2013.
