Julius Nyerere had a profound and positive impact on the psychology and founding philosophy of Tanzania.
He made it clear that no matter your religion, tribe, race or country of origin you are first and foremost ‘Tanzanian’.
“Ujamaa”
This sentiment created a sense of unity that maintained tribal harmony and tolerance and spared Tanzania any civil war or tribal violence. President Nyerere believed Tanzanians were an extended family sharing values and working together towards self-reliance. This philosophy was called “Ujamaa” which is Swahili for family or brotherhood. Nyerere believed all Africans are brothers and sisters and should have harmony within the family.
